Elon Musk’s aides at the cost-cutting “Department of Government Efficiency” have gained access to the sensitive personal data of millions of federal employees. According to reports by Reuters and Musk Watch, DOGE locked staff of the Office of Personnel Management out of their own computer systems after securing access to federal human resource databases. Two OPM staff told Musk Watch that the databases include medical histories, personally identifiable information, workplace evaluations, and other private data. Two senior OPM officials also told Reuters that their access to some of the department’s computer systems had been revoked. “We have no visibility into what they are doing with the computer and data systems,” one of the officials was quoted as saying. “That is creating great concern. There is no oversight. It creates real cybersecurity and hacking implications.” Musk has been leading a takeover of federal offices in a bid to fulfill the Trump administration’s promise to cut down government spending by billions. Members of the DOGE squad were also recently revealed to be youngsters with limited experience in any workplace—let alone the crucial federal agencies they are tasked with dismantling.
